Question by Monica: Can you rate this story?
Meanwhile, Carter and Nicole couldn’t take their hands off of each other while everyone else waited for their flight to arrive. Savannah had the misfortune of watching them suck faces. She hated seeing Carter kiss Nicole the way he used to kiss her. She looked over at Lauren who obliviously made a few calls on her Blackberry. Savannah should have known that Lauren wouldn’t have been too offended by the public display of affection considering how liberal she was about her daughter and her friends drinking. She was one of those flighty, misguided suburban mothers who had no clue what her children were doing. And that put Savannah in an uncomfortable position. Lauren’s motto was: “How are they going to learn if they don’t get any practice first.” By that, she meant that the sooner a child drinks, the less accidents would occur on their twenty-first birthday. Lauren never did make quite sense. Who would have thought that a forty-year-old woman would care what a bunch of ninth graders thought of her?
“Christ,” said Jamie, placing her Versace sunglasses on the top of her dark head. “When I get out of here, I am going to tan all day long in the sweet sun while sipping cocktails from one of those oversize martini glasses with the umbrella perched on the edge of the glass.”
“That was a mouthful.” Savannah commented.
“But it’s the truth.” Jamie said simply. “You can’t have a party without alcohol.”
Despite the fact that Savannah didn’t drink, she couldn’t disagree with her. She looked over and saw that Nicole was looking their way. Just as Savannah had guessed, Nicole climbed out of Carter’s lap and approached the girls.
“I know what you mean, James.” she started, ignoring Savannah’s remark referring to her calling Jamie “James”. (“What a hideous nickname for a girl.”)
“I think we all need a tan.”
“Aren’t you tanned enough?” Savannah asked innocently.
Everyone looked at her reprovingly. Savannah chose to ignore the reprimanding stares. No one really needed a tan. Savannah definitely didn’t need one for obvious reasons. She examined Jamie, Andy, Aaron, and Nicole’s skintones. They were all olive-skinned with Nicole being the darkest. In fact, Savannah wondered if Nicole did something that enhanced her skin complexion. Such as visiting the tanning salon or even giving herself a spray. There were rumors circulating the school on why her skin was like that. Most people assumed she had a trace of African American in her. But Savannah knew better. She had found out about Nicole’s ethnicity when Cheyenne had accused her best friend Kimmie of being racist when she made sure to tell the whole class that Emmit Till’s autopsy shots were fake when they were watching a documentary on Black History in English. (“How can I be racist if my best friend is white, Mexican, and Indian!”)
“Van, if she wants to tan; she can.” Holly hissed in her ear.
Savannah snickered lightheartedly. “That was a weird rhyme.”
“Well, I wasn’t intending to.” said Holly, finding it hard to contain a smile herself.
When it was time to board the plane, Savannah collected her Coach dufflebag and purse. Following her friends through the terminal. she made sure to check that everything of hers were placed safely in both of her bags. When she was satisfied, she entered the aerobridge. A tall, woman in a navy uniform smiled at her as she stepped over into the plane. Savannah mumbled a hi before standing in the middle of the aisle. A gasp nearly escaped her mouth. The inside of the plain was bigger than her moderate home in Graysville. She couldn’t help but notice how clean it was as well. She was always a fan of cleanliness. A faint whiff of air-freshener invaded her nostrils. If Aaron hadn’t tapped her on her back, she would have probably stood there for days.
“Come on!” Elisha exclaimed keenly. “We’re riding first class!”
“That’s not something you would want to brag in front of all these people.” Savannah admonished, looking apologetically at the passengers who looked as if they could care less.
“Oh, who cares?” she tutted. “We’re all going to the same place. So they must have some amounts of money with them.
Feeling slightly offended, Savannah followed her to the back of the plane. The inside of the first class wing was even more impeccable than the other compartments. It looked like a miniature theatre. Porcelain and cranberry were the main theme colors. A huge wide-screen television was tacked on the East wall. overlooking the pristine plane seats.
Andy and Jamie immediately ran over to the wetbar, their faces filled with ecstasy. Even Mark, who was usually unimpressed, had a closed-mouth smile on his face.
“Now, now,” Lauren admonished, lifting
