PolarIZED glasses (some of which are made by PolarOID) only let in light through if the waves are vertical. This is mainly useful because light from reflections, especially off water is polarized horizontally, so they have the effect of cutting down on glare, and making it easier to see into the water (great for fishing).

But an interesting side effect is that if you look through them at another polarizing film (including another pair of glasses), it will appear transparent or black, depending on which way you hold it. (Or which way you tilt your head.) So that’s how they make the secret picture. Some parts are polarized one way, and some parts the other way.

Unfortunately, there’s no easy way to make this at home. But anything with and LCD screen contains a piece of polarized plastic. So if you happen to have any broken electronics, this can fun to take out and experiment with. I suppose you could even cut it up and make a secret message my arranging the pieces mosaic style, but that sounds pretty tedious.
